Christchurch
is the South Island's largest city, a vibrant, cosmopolitan place heralded as the 'garden city'.
The Avon River winds through the centre of Christchurch and trams clatter across the stone and
ironwork bridges. Its Gothic revival cathedral, grey-stone 19th century buildings, tree-lined
avenues and extensive leafy parks have preserved the grace and charm of an earlier era.
There is broad range of accommodation in Christchurch for all budgets. On weekends of large events there is often a strong demand for accommodation in Central Christchurch. So book well in advance.
Christchurch is home to the Canterbury Rugby team, which is one of New Zealand's most successful provincial teams. When the Canterbury plays at home (rugby season February-October) thousands flock to watch rugby at Jade Stadium. Christchurch has many other attractions and activities to offer.
Christchurch is the gateway to the South Island for many international tourist who arrive at Christchurch Airport. There are regular flights and bus services from Christchurch to all popular destinations in the South Island. See Christchurch Transport for more information
