Wairarapa Transport

Air: Wellingotn airport is little over one hour drive. From Wellington aiport there are regular flights to most of the main towns and cities in New Zealand . Small planes and helicopters are readily available for an affordable and spectacular charter flight to a Wairarapa airfield or direct to your accommodation.

Coach: Several coachlines offer a range of scheduled services throughout the North Island.

Rail:
The train journey to from Wellington to Wairarapa is an attraction in itself, through the Rimutaka Tunnel, emerging to panoramic views across Lake Wairarapa to Palliser Bay and the Aorangi Ranges. Special Wairarapa excursion fares are available.

Driving:

From Auckland or Rotorua:

Go to Taupo and either turn off to Napier, "Art Deco City", continuing south on State Highway 2 to Woodville and Wairarapa, or continue south from Taupo via the volcanoes of Tongariro National Park. Just north of Hunterville take State Highway 54 and follow signs for Cheltenham, Ashhurst, Manawatu Gorge, Woodville and Masterton. (See driving times below)

 

From Wellington:

Wellington provides the Cook Strait ferry link with the South Island. State Highway 2 through Wairarapa offers an interesting and much less congested route in and out of Wellington. Take your time on a 60-minute scenic drive through the regenerating bush of the Rimutaka Mountain Pass.

 

Driving Times:
The following driving times in minutes and hours assume a moderate to fast pace. For Palmerston North add 1 hour to the Masterton times.For Riverside Beach subtract 10-15 minutes from the Castlepoint times.
