West Coast

The West Coast of the South Island has some of the most dramatic scenery in New Zealand. The West Coast is best known for its magnificant coastline and the Fox Glacier And Franz Josef Glacier. However there is much more, the impressive mountain peaks of teh Southern Alps, tranquil lakes, raging rivers, and lush rainforest. Five of New Zealand's 13 national parks are located on the West Coast, and the southern West Coast area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its uniqueness and as a 'special place' in the world.

The West Coast also has many historic points of interest. The West Coast history has been closely tied to mining for gold and coal.
