The Tongariro Crossing is often described as one of New
Zealand's best day hikes. The track has magnificent views and passes over
spectacular volcanic terrain. Along the track you will see lava flows,
an active crater, steam vents, and coloured lakes.
To complete the full crossing from Mangatepopo to Ketetahi is a challenging
7-8 hours hike, covering 17km. The Tongariro Crossing is not a round trip
so transport must be arranged at both ends of the track.
It should be noted that The Tongariro Crossing is an extending full-day
hike into a mountain environment and it travels over steep and often difficult
terrain. It is important to have the appropriate clothing, equipment and
fitness. The Tongariro Crossing crosses open and exposed alpine terrain
and is often subject to severe weather conditions.
Transport
There are a number of companies offering transport to and from the Tongariro
Crossing track. You can be picked up in either Turangi or Taupo and will
be dropped at the start of the track, and then picked up at the end.
Where To Stay
Prior to walking the track accommodation can be arrange in Turangi or
Taupo. Taupo is a popular tourist destination and has a wide range of
accommodation and tourist services.
