Viewing & Climbing Fox Glacier
There are many glaciers in the Southern Alps, but Franz
Josef Glacier and Fox Glacier are the only two that almost
reach the coast. Fox Glacier is located 25km south of Franz Josef. Fox
Glacier carpark is a short 8km drive from Fox Glacier township. It is
possible to walk from the car park to the face of the glacier in around
30 minutes.
If you want to climb on to the glacier you must go with a guided tour.
There are guided tour options to suit all ages and abilities. Guiding
companies provide all equipment necessary to climbing the glacier, and
transfer to and from the glacier. Scenic flights and Heli-hikes (helicopter
ride up glacier and short hike with a guide) are also available.
Fox Glacier Accommodation & Tourist Information.
The township of Fox Glacier is much smaller than Franz Josef. Hence the
range of accommodation
in Fox Glacier is more limited. There are a small number
of quality motels and backpacker, bed and breakfast, hotels, and lodges
located in the township. When it comes to dining in Fox Glacier once again
there is limited choice.
Activities To In Fox Glacier
While most people visiting Fox Glacier come to view the glacier, there
are several hiking options and Lake Matheson (6km west) is well worth
a visit.
