Getting To & From the West Coast

Air: Two airports - Westport and Hokitika - provide air links to and from the West Coast.

Road: InterCity Coachlines and Newmans Coachlines have a nation-wide network including daily scheduled coach services to the West Coast region, from both northern and southern directions. Other local companies operate services to and from this region. The Great Alpine Highway (SH73) is an important route to the East Coast (Canterbury) of the South island from the West Coast. The Great Alpine Highway is a region of diverse landscapes and climate, lakes, braided rivers, natural beauty, unique townships, and provides magnificent views of the Southern Alps.

Rail: Greymouth is the main rail terminus for the West Coast region. The 'TranzAlpine' is a daily service between Christchurch and Greymouth.

Christchurch - Greymouth 4.5 hours, Greymouth - Christchurch 4 hours.
